A Survey of Aquatic Habitat & Crustacean Species in the Kangaroo
Valley NSW.
Research Brief
Introduction
The Kangaroo Valley region is a unique area of NSW that has not been closely studied in the past for crustacean species. It is our intention to conduct biological surveys in the area, to identify habit areas and crustacean species, then use this information to preserve and conserve the habitat areas and the crustacean species. The majority of the species we will identify live in marginal areas and survive only if everything is in balance. In a time of rapid climate change, habitat alteration and land degradation, it is essential to identify the species that are currently in residence, identify their habitat needs and ensure that human activities do not alter the balance and make these areas uninhabitable. Small changes to riparian zones, water quality, upstream catchment areas, exotic plans and animals can all alter the balance. Many of the crustacean species exist in marginal areas that are not generally regarded as watercourses so are generally ignored in conservation plans for local areas. Our survey will identify the species in the area, identify their habitat needs and allow property owners and management agencies a better opportunity to work together towards the future conservation and preservation of critical habitat areas and the crustacean species that call the region home. Without this base line information specific local conservation strategies cannot be implemented.
This project was instigated at the request of local Land Care Groups and local property owners that have concerns for the freshwater crayfish in their region.
